First-Year Students

Welcome to members of our incoming class. We look forward to our new students’ arrival each summer. This page will provide you with valuable information as you prepare to begin your PhD studies in the Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program at Penn State College of Medicine.

Please view the housing page for information regarding on and off campus housing options.

Orientation for the fall semester begins in August each year and is required for all incoming students (including those who participated in the Foundations of Biomedical Research course). Additional information regarding the schedule for Orientation is sent to new students via email.

The textbooks used in the Core curriculum courses are Molecular Biology of the Cell 5th edition by Alberts et al. (ISBN 978-0815341055) and Lehninger Principles of Biochemistry 5th edition by Nelson and Cox (ISBN 978-0716771081). Both books are available at the College of Medicine through the Penn State Bookstore or through a number of online sources, including Amazon.

We also encourage incoming students to begin reading journal articles. BioMed Central and the Public Library of Science are two resources for open-access journals.

If you have questions or if we can help as you transition into the Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program at Penn State College of Medicine in Hershey, please contact us.
