Quarterly Exceptional Teacher Updates

The Exceptional Teacher initiative is a program where Penn State College of Medicine asks its learners to write a narrative about a teacher who both challenged and changed them.

Initially launched in August 2017, the initiative has generated thousands of narratives from learners. Once received, the Office for a Respectful Learning Environment logs them in a database and then sends the narrative to the named educator with copies to that person’s educational and clinical leaders.

Each month, a faculty member and a resident are chosen to be featured in the Exceptional Moments in Teaching program that involves public display of a poster with the educator’s picture and student narrative.

The college appreciates the exceptional abilities and efforts of all of its educators and also the generosity of its learners for taking the time to write such thoughtful narratives.
